Get money out of politics

 In Denmark the campaign to elect a new Premier and fill 179 seats in Parliament lasted three weeks. Ours has been going on for ever. Does anyone even know when our political season stops and starts? There were no political ads on TV and voter participation was 87.7%. Over there the ban on ads and the length of time for campaigns means money doesn't play as big a role as it does over here.

As usually happens i've been having a back and forth e-mail discussion about the state of the nation. Typically we are on opposite sides but have found common ground when the subject is money in politics. Since i was asked to answer the question how do we get it out of the system i did some research. It seems that Democrats and Republicans alike don't like the fact that politicians spend the bulk of their time in office raising money for their campaigns or raising money during their campaigns.

Corporate sponsors promote the careers of legislators all over the nation and it has gotten out of hand since the Supreme Court ruled on the Citizens United case. Corporations do use money that may belong to shareholders to finance some politicians and not others.  Wealthy individuals use their money to gain privilege's with the politicians they support. Both use their purchasing power to influence them to write laws beneficial to them and not the country. In fact today our politicians spend too much time raising money from the same people they are supposed to be monitoring.

When elections are financed by a small sliver of the population democracy is threatened. i was reading a conservative piece about why giving huge amounts to PAC's by wealthy individuals and corporations is OK...they said it was peaceful. i had to laugh. When politicians accept money for their campaigns they face a conflict of interest, whether it be PAC's writing ads for them or corporations funding their run politicians are left beholden.



If we were to shorten our campaign season to three weeks the constant mud-slinging, the negativity, the mis-leading ads, and the hateful propaganda would have no time to take root. If the season was shortened and ads on radio and TV banned our politicians might have a chance to address the mounting issues that affect the entire nation. They could address the issues instead of moving from one side of the country to the other doing fund raisers. If we are to rebuild faith in our democracy issues such as money in politics and its corrupting influence need to be addressed and debated.

If our politicians were allowed to spend less time campaigning and more time governing we might get some of the most brutal abuses of money out of our political system and we might even regain our number one slot.

Government is not a business


The nation has had 28 consecutive months of job growth and 24 months of consecutive retail sales growth but unemployment remains high while corporations sit on record amounts of cash. All of us agree the growth across the nation has been small but it has kept growing during President Obama's tenure.

Now we all remember when teachers, public employees, Planned Parenthood, NPR, the military and all the other government agencies crashed the market and wiped out half the 401K's, took trillions in taxpayer money, spilled oil in the gulf and gave themselves millions in bonuses, NO....you don't remember that...well your right i don't remember that either.

But many say we should run government like a business...i don't think so.

Do you want government to have the right to poison, would it be able to discriminate at will, would profit be the overall goal? If you believe in freedom and if government is run like a business whose freedom takes precedence?

Companies are not a democracy they operate to make a profit not to base decisions on collective actions that can't be accomplished alone. Running a government means need justifies cost, not profit.

Corporations pay their CEO's millions of dollars a year, should we pay the President $100,000,000 a year to run the government? Or should it be like Borders where we could identify states that are unprofitable and maybe sell Louisiana back to the French? Or have you forgotten that every business takes on debt and understands that they may never pay it back if they aren't successful. No...you haven't thought about that... well most people don't think about those things.

Government is different from business. Let me say that again...GOVERNMENT IS DIFFERENT FROM BUSINESS...Not everything returns a profit. Ask yourself this question, which business do you think government should mirror Borders, AIG, Bethlehem Steel, Blockbuster, Leman Brothers, Circuit City how exactly is running government like a business going to help the nation?

TAXES ARE COLLECTED TO BENEFIT A NATION NOT TO TURN A PROFIT

Business keep their affairs private. They don't have outside oversight and keep legions of lawyers in court to keep prying eyes out of their business. We still have the Sunshine Act which keeps an eye on government abuse but for how much longer? If we keep voting against government there will be none and we can expect to live in a country very similar to Somalia. Voters never make the connection between mobsters and corrupt corporate behavior but they want our country run like a business.

Conservative voters want no regulations, who thought up that crazy idea? If you want contaminated food, contaminated air, water and land vote for no regulation. At some point the cost to the environment and the cost to the nation has to be valued. We have to put a dollar amount on depleted resources, dirty air and dirty water. Corporations don't want you to think about those things so remember

• ObamaCare lets you take control of your life and begin making healthy choices before they cost you big time. Americans with insurance must get access to preventative services, such as annual checkups, mammograms and colonoscopies.  Remember: It's cheaper to prevent than to treat!

We are government

Hey Everybody wake up...there is only a few months to go until the next election and even if you want to withdraw and ignore what is happening in our country and around the world the results of your withdrawal will come back and bite you. It will be too late to say i should have been more involved.

Today, not tomorrow is the time to honor our shared identity and purpose as a nation. The fact that Democrats believe in shared sacrifice, responsibility,  good character, fairness, love of country and equality for all must be repeated. Repeat the fact that we are in this nation together and unless you move to another country you can't remove yourself from that fact.

It really is time to talk. Don't remain silent. It is important to address the issues that affect this country and discuss them with your conservative friends and relatives. Reinforce the fact that Democrats believe in protection for all. We don't believe its every man for himself. We believe no one can do it all on their own and good government helps all of us accomplish our goals.

So in keeping it simple lets think about a few things we can support and talk about.

Obamacare... it protects all of us against activities by insurance companies that prevent us from getting the care we need.

Jobs...only demand creates jobs. The middle class and the working poor are the primary consumers and the ones that create demand. Without their power to purchase we would not have an economy. If they don't have jobs our economy churns to a halt. Remember “Only Demand Creates Jobs,” and we support creating more demand.

Profit makers put their money in Switzerland, Bermuda, the Caymans, they put their factories in China, Vietnam, and South Korea. Profit makers purchase their politicians to write laws for them not all of us.

Freedom...what is it if it doesn't include immigrants, blacks, whites, purples, women and gays? We support freedom and equality for all.

Government..WE ARE THE GOVERNMENT. If you don't have government you are at the mercy of corporations and the wealthy. Ask Republicans why they want to slit our wrists and destroy the entity that works for all of us?

Profitization of government services is a Republican goal...turning everything we all own into profit making vehicles for a few is something we don't support, talk about it and tell them why we don't support tearing down government. Government works for all of us, not just a few.

Remember government workers pay taxes and do jobs corporations won't do. What we want is Good Government.

We are falling behind because we can't compete with countries overseas that subsidize healthcare, education and technology. Good government can help us compete.

And finally remember We all do better when we all do better.

Cruzan Fireworks

It was raining on the drive to Fredericksted but by the time we got there the parking lots were full of families waiting to see the show.
People were either in their cars so as not to get wet or walking around with umbrellas and raincoats. Others had staked out their spots under the arches and out of the rain. Everyone was waiting in anticipation.

When 8:00pm arrived a roar went up as the first explosions lit up the air. The skies were cloudy but dry and for the bulk of the show the rain held off. It didn't start dripping until the finale. i had one small child next to me on the waterfront that was barely old enough to speak but kept saying WOW!WOW! throughout the whole show. He was a cutie and loved it.

July 4th Independence Day

On July 4th it always rains at some point during the day on St. Croix. i've been studying this for over 30 years as an aficionado of fireworks. Every year it rains, some worse than others but we always mobilize to try and see the display regardless of the weather. Today the power went out around 9:20am when a big storm moved in with its high winds and dark gloomy clouds laden with water.

It came on a while ago and here i sit wondering if the weather will subside enough to accommodate the festivities this evening. i love fireworks so much sometimes i think i'm like a small child seeing them for the first time.

Independence Day is a huge holiday all across this nation but i wonder how many people actually contemplate its history. This year i'm putting the Declaration of Independence here for all of us to read and discuss with those closest to you. Please read it all the way through, i'll bet you find things you had forgotten or never knew to begin with. Enjoy and see you next week.

The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America,
When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.--That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, --That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. He has refused to pass other Laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of Representation in the Legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only.
